Bio
Sydney Fabis is a scenic artist who is a maker at heart. Studying Technical Direction at USC School of Dramatic Arts she has expanded her horizons and learned a variety of skills to help make paper sketches into real life scenic designs. On top of walking around the scene shop in her tool belt, she paints, makes props, knows extensive carpentry skills, and dabbles in special effects makeup. She is always ready to try something new and blend the challenges of physics and art to create a spectacular set piece. Sydney creates immersive worlds to bring audiences into the story and follow along on their own hero’s journey. Some of Sydney’s most recent projects include scenic designing a high concept version of Into the Woods while also serving as the show’s Associate Technical Director and incorporating automation into a production of Urinetown as the Technical Director. If you can imagine it, you certainly can make it a reality!
Philosophy Statement
I take my knowledge of scenic design and technical knowhow as an opportunity to create pockets of joy and adventure in daily life, allowing people to escape the mundanity of life and become a hero in their world. While incorporating messages of joy, I also fight to find voices for underrepresented groups of people, specifically the LGBTQ community. In order to bring the world to a better understanding of individual human experience and one day find true acceptance and equality for all, I focus on creating a world that plays by its own rules. By engineering an environment which survives in its own pocket dimension, defying time, space, and maybe even gravity, I hope to bring audiences into a new level of understanding. Taking these design philosophies, I live my life searching for the balance of work, passion, and personal pursuits to open up my eyes to the beauty of the world that many are blind to.
